The Neuroscience Institute performs more neurosurgery procedures than any other hospital in the region. At Tampa General, our highly skilled team of neurosurgeons is specially trained to perform procedures that treat disorders that affect the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and the extra-cranial cerebrovascular system.
We offer children and adult patients the most advanced techniques available to care for a variety of neurosurgical issues, such as spinal disorders, cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgical disorders, functional disorders, tumors that affect the neurosurgical system, and a number of other conditions.
Skull base surgery can be a neurosurgery option for treating some of the conditions listed above in both children and adults. These conditions include aneurysms, brain and spinal cord tumors, cranial bleeding, vascular malformations and complex spinal disorders.
Additionally, laser ablation is a form of minimally invasive neurosurgery that can be effective on conditions such as brain tumors, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. This cutting-edge neurological surgery has numerous advantages, like reduced recovery time and minimal pain and scarring.
Our intraoperative MRI surgical suite provides high-resolution MRI imaging of the brain during neurosurgery. Neurosurgeons can view real-time images of the brain during and after surgery, helping to reduce the risk to other parts of the brain and making it easier to confirm a surgery’s success.
Focused Ultrasound at Tampa General Hospital
Focused ultrasound (FUS), also known as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), is a novel treatment for movement disorders available at the Tampa General Hospital Neuroscience Institute – the first on the west coast of Florida to perform and offer this new treatment.
This incisionless procedure involves using ultrasound waves to heat up and destroy specific areas in the brain that generate disabling tremors. In addition, this therapy was recently approved for use in select patients with Parkinson's disease.
