Research and Innovation

As the region’s first and largest teaching hospital, and one of Florida’s leading academic health systems, Tampa General hospital is dedicated to pioneering breakthrough treatments, conducting game-changing clinical research and training the next generation of health care professionals through our partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

Tampa General has been critical in the effort to lead research and response for COVID-19, and we continue to focus on how — and where — treatment is delivered for all infectious diseases through our Global Emerging Diseases Institute, a center dedicated to groundbreaking infection prevention, research and education.

World-class research is being strengthened and expanded by the TGH-USF Health Office of Clinical Research, which initiates, operates and coordinates clinical trials that look at new ways to prevent, detect and treat disease. Including COVID trials, Tampa General and USF Health have been working together on about 350 research studies to date.

Another key initiative in our mission of significantly advancing the future of health care in the Tampa Bay region, state of Florida and nationally is the creation of TGH Ventures. Launched in November 2020, this venture capital fund is dedicated to driving a culture of innovation across our academic health system through the support of early-stage startups and direct investments. Through TGH Ventures, we have partnered with Embarc Collective, Tampa Bay’s innovation hub and education nonprofit that helps startups grow into scalable, thriving businesses.
