Tampa, FL (March 3, 2025) – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), a leader in women's health, achieved accreditation from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in complex endometriosis care, the only hospital in the Southeast to receive this prestigious recognition. Endometriosis is a chronic and debilitating condition, affecting millions of women worldwide, and often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. This accreditation recognizes TGH’s commitment and high standards in the delivery of quality patient care and safety. The recognition also signifies that TGH has met nationally and internationally recognized benchmarks after a rigorous inspection process.
Additionally, Dr. Emad Mikhail, FACOG, FACS, medical director of gynecology at Tampa General, also received accreditation as a master surgeon in complex endometriosis care. This designation is only held by four providers worldwide who meet SRC’s accreditation program requirements.
“It is truly an honor to have met SRC’s high standards and be recognized as a top surgeon for this distinguished award,” said Mikhail, who is also an associate professor and director of the division of gynecology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “As we continue to advance efforts in endometriosis surgery, I am also grateful for the combined efforts of our TGH and USF Health colleagues as we bring the highest level of complex endometriosis care to patients across the region and beyond.”
“We are immensely proud of Dr. Mikhail for being recognized as one of the top endometriosis surgeons in the world,” said Dr. Judette Louis, MPH, chief of the TGH Women's Institute and James M. Ingram Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “This honor emphasizes the importance of receiving care at an academic health system to ensure the best outcomes possible. This recognition also showcases how our team is dedicated to innovative surgical techniques, as well as providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with even the most complex cases of endometriosis,” she said.
Health care facilities and surgeons seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment.
“SRC’s accreditation solidifies the TGH Women’s Institute’s commitment to our patients and the outstanding care and outcomes we provide,” said Nikki Hurley, interim vice president of Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH and the TGH Women’s Institute. “Our work does not end here, as we will continue to improve the quality of life for women with endometriosis by providing personalized, compassionate care.”
In addition to receiving the SRC accreditation, the TGH Women’s Institute is ranked a top 10 hospital in the nation and the highest-ranked hospital in Florida for Obstetrics & Gynecology by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24.
