Input from global medical professionals and improved patient outcomes helped secure the ranking.

TAMPA, FL (Jan. 7, 2025) – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the region’s only academic health system, has been ranked among the top hospitals in the world for specialized care according to Newsweek’s “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2025.”

The ranking features comprehensive lists of top hospitals globally, including the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 250 for pediatrics, and the top 150 for fields including cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, and orthopedics. Newsweek also recognized Tampa General as one of the “World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2025 and one of the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Cancer 2025.”

“This prominent distinction is a testament to Tampa General’s exceptional team of clinicians and researchers who are transforming specialized health care with improved access to high-quality care and better outcomes for patients in the region and beyond,” said Dr. Peggy Duggan, Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Executive & Chief Medical Officer, Tampa General. “We are honored by Newsweek’s recognition of this commitment and the progress we have made in bringing world-class specialty care to Floridians, including our most vulnerable and underserved populations.”

The ranking is based on three key data sources:

  • Global Peer Recommendations: Tens of thousands of medical professionals from over 30 countries participated in a worldwide online survey conducted from May to July 2024. Experts were invited to recommend hospitals in their fields of expertise, ensuring that the rankings reflect the insights and experiences of top health care providers.
  • Accreditation Data: This year’s ranking also incorporates accreditations and certifications from globally recognized institutions such as the Joint Commission International (JCI), the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), ensuring a robust quality standard for hospital performance.
  • Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs): The increasing importance of patient-centered care is reflected in the PROMs Implementation Survey. Hospitals were evaluated on their use of PROMs to optimize care and improve patient outcomes, contributing to the overall score.

This year’s ranking also introduced several updates to improve accuracy and emphasize quality care:

  • Increased weighting of accreditation and PROMs data to better reflect hospital quality.
  • Inclusion of the previous year’s recommendation data to account for reputational continuity.
  • Decreased emphasis on overall reputation to highlight quality metrics such as accreditations and patient outcomes.
