Tampa, FL (Nov. 4, 2024) – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute is ranked as one of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Oncology by Newsweek and Statista. Tampa General is amongst the top five hospitals in Florida to earn this recognition, reflecting excellence in providing cancer care.
“As the region’s only university-affiliated academic health system, Tampa General has a duty to not only provide exceptional cancer care but define it through ongoing innovation that elevates the standard of care we deliver and provides novel therapies and treatments,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “We are tremendously proud that the TGH Cancer Institute and our dedicated team continue to achieve recognition as a national and global leader in cancer care and that we are able to provide groundbreaking and personalized care to patients across our state and beyond.”
The TGH Cancer Institute, in partnership with the University of South Florida (USF) Health Morsani College of Medicine, is one of Florida’s most comprehensive cancer care centers and one of only a few in the state affiliated with an academic institution conducting groundbreaking clinical studies. The Institute offers unmatched access to state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and therapies administered by some of the world’s most renowned medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists and researchers.
“I am proud to lead a team that understands deeply how personal and unique each person’s cancer treatment journey is,” said Dr. Eduardo M. Sotomayor, vice president and executive director of the TGH Cancer Institute. “Our work covers not only medical expertise but empathy, a skill that informs every advancement our Institute makes to redefine what cancer care means to our patients and community.”
The Institute is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a prestigious quality indicator from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This accreditation signifies that the TGH Cancer Institute meets 34 quality care standards, adopts a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and prioritizes improving not only outcomes but quality of life for each patient served.
“At Tampa General, we know that to provide exceptional cancer care, you must constantly be innovating," said Dr. Abraham Schwarzberg, executive vice president, chief of oncology and president of the Tampa General Provider Network (TGPN), and vice president of clinical and translational research. “This recognition by Newsweek reflects our team’s commitment to providing the most advanced treatments to our community by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in oncology research.”
This recognition follows Tampa General’s inclusion on Newsweek’s America’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2024 list, which highlights Tampa General as a leader in cancer, cardiac and orthopaedic care. On this list, the TGH Cancer Institute was listed among the top 10 cancer hospitals in Florida for the second consecutive time.
