Tampa, FL (Sept. 14, 2023) – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) announced that Dustin Pasteur, the academic health system’s vice president of facilities and construction, was named by Becker’s Hospital Review to the publication’s list of “Rising Stars: 67 Healthcare Leaders Under 40.” Pasteur is being recognized for his contributions to Tampa General’s continued growth through his exceptional leadership of the academic health system’s facilities management, plant operations, life safety and compliance, design, and construction services departments.
Pasteur joined the team at Tampa General in 2009 as a staff designer. He quickly rose through the ranks of the organization to become an impactful leader, helping to drive the transformation of the health care landscape in West Central Florida.
“Our ability to be successful as we continue to drive innovation, propel research, deliver the most advanced technology and provide leading-edge care to Tampa General’s academic health system patients is directly tied to the facilities we are enhancing and standing up across the Tampa Bay region and beyond,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General.
“Dustin has been critical in making this happen by ensuring that our facilities provide increased access to high-quality care and improved patient experience for our community. At the same time, he and his team are establishing a best practice playbook to share with health systems across the country. Dustin is exceptional at his job and a dynamic leader, and this recognition reflects his work, strategic thinking, and dedication.”
Pasteur developed and leads a team of 20 design and construction professionals, putting Tampa General on the map as one of the first health systems in the nation to have its own internal design team staffed by architects and engineers, which produces 85 percent of all design projects in-house. In addition, he directs a team of 85 maintenance and plant operations team members who work on all the elements of maintaining a world-class academic health system facility.
Through his integral role in the ongoing execution of Tampa General’s historic $550 million master facility plan, Pasteur's innovative approach to facilities growth and management has resulted in significant cost savings and high-quality projects, attributable to the team’s unique knowledge and understanding of the health system.
Under his leadership, the team has significantly advanced this five-year expansion plan, which includes a new 500,000-square-foot transplant, neurosciences and surgical pavilion, enhancements to the academic health system’s burn center and burn ICU, operating suite renovations, construction of a dedicated bone marrow transplant unit, the TGH Cancer Institute satellite clinic in Brandon, a free-standing emergency department as well as an academic behavioral health hospital. These projects are just a few that are part of Tampa’s growing Medical and Research District.
“As the largest expansion in Tampa General’s almost 100-year history, our master facility plan will be transformational as we plan for the future care of our patients in the Tampa Bay region and across the state of Florida,” said Kelly Cullen, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Tampa General Hospital. “Throughout his professional development at our academic health system, Dustin has proven time and time again that he is an innovative leader who is laser-focused on implementing projects that move us forward in delivering world-class care. I have every confidence in Dustin’s ability in guiding completion of this essential plan.”
Pasteur has demonstrated his commitment to excellence in life safety planning and plant operations through his leadership in expanding the facility’s Central Energy Plant. Completed in 2022, the 16,000-square-foot Central Energy Plant is built to withstand the impact and flooding of a Category 5 hurricane and provides a reliable, protected power supply in the event of a power disruption.
Additionally, he has managed key elements of the academic health system’s hurricane and emergency planning and preparedness initiatives, including the implementation of the AquaFence, a water-impermeable barrier to protect vulnerable areas of Tampa General’s waterfront campus against storm surge and flooding. The AquaFence can withstand storm surge up to 15 feet above sea level.
Pasteur is also an integral part of supporting Tampa General’s commitment to the personal and professional development of its team members. He is a founder of LEAD (Leadership, Enrichment and Development) TGH, the academic health system’s platform for emerging leaders to create career pathways and currently serves in an advisory capacity.
Prior to joining Tampa General, Pasteur worked as an architectural project coordinator and an aviation designer. He holds three degrees – a bachelor’s and a master’s in Architecture from the University of Florida, Gainesville as well as a master’s in Business Administration from the University of South Florida, Tampa.
“It's an honor to be recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review alongside an impressive group of leaders who are effectively creating the future of health care,” Pasteur said. “Facilities, construction, and plant operations are some of the most essential functions that enable health systems to care for their communities. We have an outstanding team that is responsible for maintaining our health system infrastructure and I’m proud to say our team is setting the standard for how the health care industry can invest and innovate in this space.”
