The Global Emerging Diseases Institute (GEDI) is a true collaboration between Tampa General Hospital and USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. An entire team of physician leaders from TGH and USF Health Morsani College of Medicine support the institute, providing inpatient and outpatient clinical care for patients suffering from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, conducting cutting-edge research and teaching the next generation of infectious disease physicians.

The Fight Against COVID-19
In March 2020, physicians, nurses and countless other healthcare workers at Tampa General Hospital and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine promptly joined the battle against SARS-CoV2—the virus that causes COVID-19. The formation of the Global Emerging Diseases Institute allowed us to fight harder, both in patient care and research. Our hospital treated thousands of COVID patients, produced more than 100,000 COVID tests and has facilitated more than 30 clinical research trials.

Despite COVID-19 being in the spotlight for so long, the Global Emerging Diseases Institute has a mission to combat many other types of infectious diseases as well, including bacterial, viral, bone and fungal infections.
With state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory and imaging facilities and by administering immunizations on site, we’re able to efficiently diagnose and treat a variety of infectious diseases. In addition, TGH is home to experts in many different medical specialties and subspecialities, which allows us to identify and treat any accompanying issues.
