Tampa, FL (September 18, 2025) – The Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has been recognized as a top performer in the Pediatric Hospital cohort of the 2025 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking by Vizient, Inc. The award honors health care provider organizations that demonstrate excellence in delivering high-quality care based on measures in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking, including safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, and variation in care. Tampa General is among 10 health systems nationally and is the only in Florida to achieve this recognition.

“Across our organization, we understand how important it is that as we carry out our mission, we prioritize the health and well-being of our children, which in turn, establishes a foundation for a long and healthy life,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General. “Tampa General has long worked to build and strengthen a culture of innovation and continuous improvement to drive efficient care coordination, high-quality care and better outcomes, and we are incredibly proud to have those efforts recognized by Vizient.”

The award includes measures from the Vizient Clinical Data Base, the HCAHPS survey and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). The Vizient Quality and Accountability Study, which informs the rankings, has been conducted annually since 2005 to help participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers and identify best practices associated with high performance in quality and safety.

“As both a parent and a pediatric health care leader, I understand how critical it is for families to have access to highly specialized clinical expertise and innovative care,” said Sarah Frahn, vice president of  TGH Women’s Institute and Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General. “This recognition underscores our team’s integrated, multidisciplinary approach that ensures that our youngest patients receive the same quality of care – powered by academic medicine – tailored to the unique needs of children, no matter their age or condition.”

This year, 1,220 participating hospitals were segmented into seven cohorts for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study measures performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and variation in care. The study factors in measures from the Vizient Clinical Data Base. It includes performance data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network. The Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH was recognized alongside hospitals and health systems nationally that:

  • Care for at least 250 high-acuity medical neonates annually
  • Receive more patients transferred in for care than it transfers out, by a margin of more than 5%
  • Perform at least 50 major surgeries on neonates annually

“We extend our sincere congratulations to this year’s top-performing hospitals recognized in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study,” said David Levine, chief medical officer of Vizient. “These organizations have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to delivering safe, effective and patient-centered care. Their performance reflects the highest standards in clinical quality and operational excellence, and we are proud to honor their achievements.”
