Tampa, FL (August 9, 2024) – Scott Arnold, executive vice president and chief digital and innovation officer at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as part of its 2024 classes of “46 Chief Digital Officers to Know” and “133 Chief Information Officers to Know.” These honors collectively reflect Arnold’s dedication to developing and executing innovative strategies to transform the delivery of care at Tampa General.
“Scott's contributions to the hospital information technology (IT) industry and to Tampa General have been truly instrumental in positioning us as a top-tier academic health system and a hub for cutting-edge, high-quality care,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General. “His deep knowledge and innovative practice of information technology has enabled us to streamline processes and adopt new technologies that optimize care quality and elevate the patient experience.”
Since joining Tampa General in 2010, Arnold has significantly transformed the academic health system’s digital landscape. Initially tasked with managing the conversion of the system’s electronic medical record system, the largest technology implementation in Tampa General history, Arnold's responsibilities have since expanded to include overseeing all technology across the organization including IT, analytics, cyber security, clinical engineering and innovation. Arnold also oversees TGH Ventures, the academic health system’s innovation center and corporate venture fund.
Under Arnold's leadership, Tampa General has become a leader in innovation, and he has played a pivotal role in the implementation of predictive analytics and AI to support care delivery — working with his team to streamline and support the work of clinicians and the greater Tampa General team.
Arnold is spearheading the expansion of Tampa General’s partnership with Palantir Technologies with plans to deploy Palantir’s Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) to deliver a Care Coordination Operating System, which will securely encode Tampa General’s domain expertise, real-time situational awareness and large-language models into decision-support tools to power eligibility and prioritization workflows for front-line teams across all aspects of care operations.
Tampa General also recently announced a partnership with Nuance to begin using DAX Copilot ambient listening technology to increase productivity for the academic health system’s physicians and clinicians. The ambient listening tool will securely capture verbally delivered patient stories, including details of symptoms, observations and experiences and automatically convert multi-party conversations into specialty-specific clinical summaries in seconds.
"I appreciate Becker's for recognizing the hard work our team has put in to implement and embrace new technologies to improve our workstreams,” Arnold said. "The use of health care IT serves as a transition from transactional interactions to a more curated and holistic patient experience. Each program we have equipped Tampa General with streamlines health care provision and is beneficial to our patients, our team and, subsequently, the entire Tampa Bay community.”
This recognition is the latest in a series of accolades for Arnold and Tampa General. In 2023, Arnold was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s lists of “Chief Digital Officers of Hospitals and Health Systems to Know,” “Chief Innovation Officers of Hospitals and Health Systems to Know,” “CISOs and CPOs to Know,” and “Chief Information Officers to Know.”
Under his leadership, Tampa General received recognition from Newsweek as one of the “World’s Best Smart Hospitals” in 2024 and was highlighted as one of CHIME Digital Health’s “Most Wired” organizations consistently for a decade. Additionally, Tampa General received Stage 7 designation from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) for continuous efforts to improve patient outcomes by implementing technology practices related to electronic medical records (EMR).
