One of Nation's Best - National and International Recognition

Letter from Dr. Judette Louis

Chief of the TGH Women’s Institute

Since the day I walked onto Tampa General Hospital’s (TGH) campus, my experience within the Women’s Institute has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Our clinicians go above and beyond to provide the most innovative health care and the best evidence-based treatments for patients with everything from deep endometriosis to pelvic prolapse to those who are choosing to bring a child into the world.

The fact that we've been named among the Top 50 Best Hospitals for Obstetrics & Gynecology, and are highest-ranked in Florida in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2022-2023 rankings, is a testament to that commitment to care.

TGH is also a safety net hospital and, by default, we receive patients from across Florida. Our robust team includes certified nurse-midwives, world-renowned obstetricians, high-risk pregnancy specialists and fertility experts, as well as providers across a full range of specialties – all working together to offer compassionate, patient-centered care for patients and their babies. We follow the latest guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and other academic organizations to help women the best outcomes.

The Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at TGH is one of just 12 regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers designated by the state of Florida where clinicians deliver the highest level of medical care 24 hours a day to premature and sick infants and to women with high-risk pregnancies.

At TGH, we believe that where you deliver matters. Our skilled and supportive team, which includes physicians and midwives, can provide the full spectrum of services from low-risk birth to high-acuity care. Regardless of the challenges that may present themselves, our team has the experience and preparation to deliver superior care. The TGH Women’s Institute is delivering innovation to offer new therapies, patient-centered surgeries and fetal care for babies with complex conditions.

Nationally and Internationally Recognized Women’s Institute

In addition to earning a spot in the Top 50 Best Hospitals, and #1 in Florida in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2022-2023 rankings, TGH is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellent maternal and fetal care.

TGH was the first hospital in the United States to be recognized by the Maternal Safety Foundation as a Maternal Center of Excellence for placenta accreta and VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). It is recognized by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) as one of only 15 delivery hospitals in Florida to promote vaginal deliveries and reduce cesarean section deliveries for first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies. Given the extraordinarily high number of cesarean births in Florida, this is a significant accomplishment.

Also of note is TGH’s recognition as a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care by demonstrating expertise and a commitment to quality care for vaginal and cesarean section deliveries. Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better overall patient satisfaction and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries. These nationally recognized facilities and providers are recognized not only for their expertise but also their efficiency in delivering that specialty care.

In 2022, TGH was named one of Newsweek’s Best Maternity Hospitals in the United States, a distinction the hospital has earned for the past three years. TGH is among the Best Maternity Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit that monitors the quality and safety of health care organizations. Tampa General Hospital is one of only three hospitals in the Tampa Bay area to receive international recognition as a Baby-Friendly® designated birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., an organization that supports breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

Tampa General Hospital reached a delivery milestone this year: 7,000+ That’s far more than any other hospital in the region.
